Split System Air Con Sizing Guide

It is important to install the correct size system. A unit that is too small will struggle to cool the space and work too hard. This could potentially shorten the lifespan of the unit, and may operate inefficiently. A unit that is too large may short cycle and will use more power than necessary.

We have put together a guide on selecting a size based on the size of the room.

  • 1.7kW units will hand heating and cooling requirements for areas of 10m2 to 17m2
  • 2.0kW units will handle heating and cooling requirements for areas of 12m2 to 20m2
  • 2.5kW units will handle heating and cooling requirements for areas of 15m2 to 25m2
  • 3.5kW units will handle heating and cooling requirements for areas of 20m2 to 30m2
  • 5.0kW units will handle heating and cooling requirements for areas of 30m2 to 50m2
  • 6.0kW units will handle heating and cooling requirements for areas of 37m2 to 55m2
  • 7.1kW units will handle heating and cooling requirements for areas of 40m2 to 65m2
  • 8.0kW units will handle heating and cooling requirements for areas of 50m2 to 75m2
  • 9.5kW units will handle heating and cooling requirements for areas of 60m2 to 90m2

The above sizing is to be used as a guide only. There are many factors that we use to determine correct sizing such as:

– Ceiling Height

– Building type and aspect

– Climate of where you live

– Appliances being used in the area

– On average how many people will occupy the space

– Materials used in the construction of home/building

– How much and rating of insulation in walls and ceiling
